Breath of Heaven

Birth of Venus ~ Sandro Botticelli

Birth of Venus ~ Sandro Botticelli

How comes our physical body to the state of perfection it is found in now? Through millions of years of evolution, of course, yet never through, or from, animals, as taught by materialism.

For, as Carlyle says: — “The essence of our being, the mystery in us that calls itself  ‘I,’ — what words have we for such things? — it is a breath of Heaven, the highest Being reveals himself in man. This body, these faculties, this life of ours, is it not all as a vesture for the unnamed?”

Miracle of Miracles

So wrote Helena Blavatsky in her The Secret Doctrine in 1888, and continues:- “The breath of heaven, or rather the breath of life, called in the bible Nephesh, is in every animal, in every animate speck as in every mineral atom. But none of these has, like man, the consciousness of the nature of that highest Being, as none has that divine harmony in its form which man possesses.” human-anatomy-03

The breath of heaven, or rather the breath of life is, as Novalis said, and no one since has said it better, as repeated by Carlyle:

“There is but one temple in the universe, and that is the body of man. Nothing is holier than that high form . . . . We touch heaven when we lay our hand on a human body!” “This sounds like a mere flourish of rhetoric,” adds Carlyle, “but it is not so.

“If well meditated it will turn out to be a scientific fact — the expression of the actual truth of the thing. We are the miracle of miracles — the great inscrutable Mystery.”  (SD 1:211-12)

Mysterious Complexity

What says Science today?

The August 5, 2009 NewScientist features 10 things about humans that science can’t yet explain. “We belong to a remarkably quirky species,” the article says, and “despite our best efforts, some of our strangest foibles still defy explanation.” Among these flaws are flippantly listed: blushing, laughter, teenagers, dreams, altruism, art, superstition—even kissing and nose-picking are on the list.

At one point the writer demands: “what are they for?” On “altruism”: if it is really true that we are altruistic by nature, “most agree it doesn’t make evolutionary sense.”

Second Guessing Nature

The appendix never made any sense either to physiologists and doctors, until recently, who once thought of the little worm-shaped organ as some long-ago evolutionary vestigial appendage, and therefore dismissed it as expendable. Like the tonsils, there was little at stake, “because we can survive without it.”

Recently, researchers published a new explanation in The Journal of Theoretical Biology. “The appendix, they suggest, is a ‘safe house’ for commensal bacteria, the symbiotic germs that aid digestion and help protect against disease-causing germs,” reported the New York Times in June of last year.

“It has even been suggested that the term vestigial is obsolete, useful only as a reflection of the anatomical knowledge of the day. In fact, these days many biologists are extremely wary of talking about vestigial organs at all,” wrote Laura Spinney in the May 14, 2008 NewScientist.

No Evidence for Randomness

“Why didn’t anyone check this before?”

Now the New York Times, August 4, 2009, reports that the human spleen may serve a function after all. No longer just a familiar literary device for irritability, the article Finally, the Spleen Gets Some Respect notes, and reports that “Scientists have discovered that the spleen, long consigned to the B-list of abdominal organs and known as much for its metaphoric as its physiological value, plays a more important role in the body’s defense system than anyone suspected.”

human-anatomy-02“Reporting in the current issue of the journal Science, researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School describe studies showing that the spleen is a reservoir for huge numbers of immune cells called monocytes, and that in the event of a serious trauma to the body like a heart attack, gashing wound or microbial invasion, the spleen will disgorge those monocyte multitudes into the bloodstream to tackle the crisis.”

The parallel in military terms is a standing army,” said Matthias Nahrendorf, an author of the report. “You don’t want to have to recruit an entire fighting force from the ground up every time you need it.”

That researchers are only now discovering a major feature of a rather large organ they have been studying for at least 2,000 years demonstrates yet again that there is nothing so foreign as the place we call home.

“Often, if you come across something in the body that seems like a big deal, you think, ‘Why didn’t anybody check this before?’ ” Dr. Nahrendorf said.

“But the more you learn, the more you realize that we’re just scratching on the surface of life. We don’t know the whole story about anything.”

Evidence of Design

The Synthesis of Occult Science

The ancients had knowledge passed on to them from ancient master scientists, and understood that a higher, wiser consciousness is “king in the domain of man’s bodily life,” writes William Q. Judge in his article The Synthesis of Occult Science. The prototypical designs for all forms “descended into matter in the cosmic process, till it reached the mineral plane,” then

“journeyed upward through the ‘three kingdoms’ till it reached the human plane. The elements of its being, like the cells and molecules of human-anatomy-07man’s body, are groupings of structures accessory or subordinate to it. The human monad or Ego is therefore akin to all below it and heir to all above it, linked by indissoluble bonds to spirit and matter, ‘God’ and ‘Nature.’”

A Grand Plan

The order of the body’s cells is part of the Grand Plan he says, and the “order in which they are arranged, the principle upon which they are grouped, constituting the human form, is not simply an evolved shape from the lower animal plane, but an involved principle from a higher plane, an older world ….

cell_collection_web_thumb

“How could man epitomize Cosmos if he did not touch it at every point and involve it in every principle? If man’s being is woven in the web of destiny, his potencies and possibilities take hold of divinity as the woof and pattern of his boundless life. Why, then, should he grow weary or disheartened? Alas! Why should he be degraded, this heir of all things!”  The fundamental point is that there is:

“but one indivisible and absolute Omniscience and Intelligence in the Universe, and this thrills throughout every atom and infinitesimal point of the whole finite Kosmos ….

Unlocking the Mystery of Life

The Inherent Design of Life

Of the occult evolutionary scheme, Helena Blavatsky writes (Secret Doctrine 1:277):-

“The whole order of nature evinces a progressive march towards a higher life. There is design in the action of the seemingly blindest forces. The whole process of evolution with its endless adaptations is a proof of this. The immutable laws that weed out the weak and feeble species, to make room for the strong, and which ensure the ‘survival of the fittest,’ though so cruel in their immediate action — all are working toward the grand end.

Everything is Conscious

“The very fact that adaptations do occur, that the fittest do survive in the struggle for existence, shows that what is called ‘unconscious Nature’ is in reality an aggregate of [intelligent] forces.”

“Nature…cannot be ‘unconscious,’ as it is the emanation from, and thus an aspect (on the manifested plane) of the absolute consciousness. Where is that daring man who would presume to deny to vegetation and even to minerals a consciousness of their own. All he can say is, that this consciousness is beyond his comprehension.”

Humanity’s Spiritual Creators

All the ancient adept luminaries taught that the human we know today is the product of a triple evolutionary scheme: physical, mental and spiritual. “When, moved by the law of Evolution,” say these teachers, “the Lords of Wisdom infused into him the spark of consciousness” —and “the first feeling it awoke to life and activity was a sense of solidarity, of one-ness with his spiritual creators:”

“As the child’s first feeling is for its mother and nurse, so the first aspirations of the awakening consciousness in primitive man were for those whose element he felt within himself, and who yet were outside, and independent of him. Devotion arose out of that feeling, and became the first and foremost motor in his nature — for it is the only one which is natural in our heart, which is innate in us, and which we find alike in human babe and the young of the animal.”

design

“All a kind of worship”

“This feeling of irrepressible, instinctive aspiration in primitive man,” Blavatsky writes (SD 1:210), “is beautifully, and one may say intuitionally, described by Carlyle:”

“The great antique heart, how like a child’s in its simplicity, like a man’s in its earnest solemnity and depth! heaven lies over him wheresoever he goes or stands on the earth; making all the earth a mystic temple to him, the earth’s business all a kind of worship.

“Glimpses of bright creatures flash in the common sunlight; angels yet hover, doing God’s messages among men. Wonder, miracle, encompass the man — he lives in an element of miracle. The essence of it lives through all times and all eternity!”

THE idea that things can cease to exist and still be, is a fundamental one in Eastern psychology.

Under this apparent contradiction in terms, there rests a fact of Nature to realize is the important thing.

A familiar instance of a similar paradox is afforded by chemical combination. The question whether Hydrogen and Oxygen cease to exist, when they combine to form water, is still a moot one.

Some [argue] that since they are found again when the water is decomposed, they must be there all the while—others contending that as they actually turn into something totally different, they must cease to exist as themselves for the time being.

“Neither side is able to form the faintest conception of the real condition of a thing, which has become something else, and yet has not ceased to be itself.”

The God Effect 3

Light of GodANCIENT SAGES taught that this physical world is interpenetrated by a series of increasingly ethereal worlds or fields, composed of energy-substances beyond our range of perception.

The fields closest to us are referred to as the “astral light.” It is already confirmed by science that the fundamental building block of matter is energy. And all physical life, from crystals to the atoms and cells of our body emit this energy in the form of photons—waves and particles of light.

The Magician

“Light is Life,” Helena Blavatsky wrote, “both are electricity — the life principle pervading the universe, the electric vivifier of all things.”

“Light is the great Protean magician, and under the divine will of the architect… its multifarious, omnipotent waves gave birth to every form as well as to every living being. From its swelling electric bosom, spring matter and spirit. Within its beams lie the beginnings of all physical and chemical action, and of all cosmic and spiritual phenomena.”

The vast majority of the energy potentially available for use on Earth arrives in the form of light from the Sun:

One Unity

Energy and substance are one and inseparable. Because, as everyone now understands, matter is really energy, made up of what science calls “atoms”— the immanent energy which ancient teachers understood as an aspect of spirit-force. The Theosophical wisdom tradition explains that:-

“Spirit and matter are one, being the two opposite poles of the universal manifested substance. …the opposite poles of subject and object, spirit and matter, are but aspects of the One Unity in which they are synthesized…”ibodylr

Human Magnets

The Russian electrical engineer, Semyon Kirlian, with his famous photographs of the subtle light emissions of leaves, radiating even from inanimate objects, was the first modern to publicize the discovery.

Thumb Field
Thumb Field

Thousands of people have since had their astral photographs taken with so-called “aura cameras.” The technology makes for brisk business at psychic fairs and New Age conferences—but might there be something more significant about these fields than pretty pictures?

Stuck in The Field

Disease processes often get stuck in our field, explaining why energy healing techniques, like EFT, meditation and yoga—which help to reestablish a clear flow of information energy in our field—are so frequently beneficial.

“Great strides have been made in the arts and in cure of diseases, but in the future, as the flower of our civilization unfolds, new diseases will arise and more strange disorders will be known, springing from causes that lie deep in the minds of men and which can only be eradicated by spiritual living.” - H. P. Blavatsky

As this video explains, disease occurs first in the energy field around the body, long before it is detected in the physical.

Latticework Energy Patterns

Paracelsus

An impression of every thought, deed, and event is imprinted in this astral field, as taught in Theosophy, which therefore forms a sort of memory of nature. Likewise, within and around the physical body there is a series of subtler “bodies” composed of these more ethereal states of matter.

Paracelsus traced the second cause of disease to the astral, or sidereal body, which is the vehicle of the life-principle, or Archaeus.

“The Archaeus is of a magnetic nature, and attracts or repels other sympathetic or antipathetic forces belonging to the same plane. The less power of resistance for astral influence a person possesses, the more will he be subject to such influences.” (Paragranum)

Energy fields of fingers
Energy fields of fingers

Rupert Sheldrake, as does Theosophy, proposes that memories are captured on etheric substances, on supra-physical planes. His scientific ideas, largely ignored by orthodox science, are gaining new ground. Thanks to a spiritual shift in consciousness today, it’s an idea whose time has come.

The Morphogenic Field 1

We gain access to astral or akasic records through vibrational synchrony or affinity, (what Sheldrake calls “morphic resonance”)–by vibrations transmitted through the ethereal medium. There is an analogy in the way that information is carried by electromagnetic impulses to cell phones, TVs, radios, and computers, or by light through fiber optic cables.

The Morphogenic Field 2

If information can be stored and transmitted in this way, it’s a puddle-jump to understanding how astral energy fields do the same thing. Memory is no more than archived information. David Pratt writes:

“Experiments have shown that memory is both everywhere and nowhere in particular. Sheldrake suggests that the reason for the recurrent failure to find memory-traces in brains is very simple: they do not exist there.”

Karma Fields

prayerflags
Prayer Flags

If thoughts were not substantial entities, and could not be stored and retrieved, why would The Buddha have made so much of them?

The first words of the Dhammapada are:

“ALL that we are is the result of what we have thought: all that we are is founded on our thoughts and formed of our thoughts.”

Garbage In, Garbage Out

To esoteric students, concepts of synchrony and affinity seem a lot like the explanation of how a person’s karma is stored and delivered. We receive our karma, just as we tune into our favorite radio station or TV show — we only have to dial into the specific broadcast frequency delivering those programs.

But our relationship to our past can be complicated. We’ve set many of our favorite programs on auto-dial. Reruns from a previous life, we may not even be consciously aware they are running.

belief

Sometimes we are conscious and purposeful in seeking enlightenment. Mostly we seem to live on auto-pilot. And as a result we can get hooked on specific images, repetitive thoughts and ideas, “hang-ups” which often act to block us from seeing impartially.

When this happens we are ruled by, instead of ruling our creations. We can miss learning opportunities when we are just reacting to old reruns and scripts hanging around in our psychic field.

Gregg Braden: The Matrix of Life

Gregg Braden explains there is a living field between the particles of atoms that gives matter its form — this is the matrix of all matter. Ancient civilizations already knew this, and the Western world is only beginning to wake up to it he says:

Who Rules: Heart or Brain?

A new understanding of how the brain works follows similar lines. The brain is a complex local network. It is also an “antenna” or “receiver” of images, memories, thoughts, and ideas from the surrounding energy-field. These are presented to the onstage consciousness of each person (or “actor”).

According to Sheldrake, we are also influenced “by social and cultural fields contained within the overall field of the earth,” writes David Pratt:

“In Theosophy we are said to contribute thoughts and ideas to the pooled memory of the astral light and attract from it those ideas and thoughts with which we resonate most strongly. The astral light may be considered to be the astral body of the earth, and plays a role similar to what Sheldrake calls the morphic field of Gaia.”

The heart acts generally the same way, with the exception that the heart-field functions as the seat of the soul or thinking entity in the body.

Rollin McCraty: Science of the Heart

Some frontier researchers, like Roland McCraty, say that all thoughts and feelings arise first in the heart field, and secondarily transmitted to the brain. The average heart-field is much larger than the brain, and has been measured to extend to twelve feet from the body.

From this we can understand the Native American tradition of placing the hand over the heart when saying “I think.”

Additionally, the heart communicates directly with the “little heart,” the pineal gland, hidden deeply in the brain. But the subtle psycho-physiological mechanism of this activity is not well understood, and will be explored in another post.

The Substance of GOD

“The infinite and uncreated spirit that we usually call GOD, a substance of the highest virtue and excellency,” Blavatsky writes in Isis Unveiled 1:206, “produced everything else by emanative causality.”

“God thus is the primary substance, the rest, the secondary — he, the primary substance, is the cause of motion as well as of the matter, and yet we rightly say that it is matter which moves itself.  … ‘a substance indiscernible, that can move itself, that can penetrate, contract, and dilate itself, and can also penetrate, move, and alter matter’”…

Field Who Art in Heaven

Humanity has placed responsibility for healing on appeals to a “God” or “Gods” outside. But in fact, healing has always been directly accessible to us by that aspect of  the God field that surrounds us intimately every moment, awake or asleep. Like fish in the ocean, that substance is our lifeline. More than merely surviving, however, real health seems to involve obeying its primordial rules, through spiritual living.

“The evolution of the God-idea proceeds apace with man’s own intellectual evolution,” Blavatsky wrote. “So true it is that the noblest ideal to which the religious Spirit of one age can soar, will appear but a gross caricature to the philosophic mind in a succeeding epoch!”

The Temple of GOD

“Grant us our postulate that God is a universally diffused, infinite principle, and how can man alone escape from being soaked through by, and in, the Deity?”

“We call our ‘Father in heaven,’ she wrote, “that deific essence of which we are cognizant within us, in our heart and spiritual consciousness, and which has nothing to do with the anthropomorphic conception we may form of it in our physical brain or its fancy…

‘Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the spirit of (the absolute) God dwelleth in you?’” (1 Corinthians 3:16)

As Above, So Below

We have been looking primarily at the personal-individual ways we interact with the spiritual, mental, psychic and body fields. But to expand the  discussion we must reverse our vision, in light of the Kabala tenet “As Above so Below.”

Karma acts individually — but there is also family, racial, national and world Karma. All of these are intertwined and interblended at every point in any given person’s lifetime.

Example: if we don’t raise our voice to oppose an unjust war, we become to that extent participants — the karma is attached to us. With many occult hints on Karma in his Aphorisms on Karma, William Q. Judge notes: “the effect is wrapped up in and is not succedent to the cause.”

“Whatever action he performs, whether good or bad, every thing done in a former body must necessarily be enjoyed or suffered.” –Anugita, Cp. III.

Fields in Space

For the big picture—the universal origin of personal and Nature fields—we turn to science and cosmology. Fundamental to the makeup of the cosmos is what the Hindu philosophers called The Akasa, and may be related to what frontier scientists are recognizing as “plasma”— we live in an “electric universe.”

In her first work, Isis Unveiled, Helena Blavatsky confirmed the teaching:

“…the first motion was communicated to the whole universe, and the electric thrill was instantaneously felt throughout the boundless space. Spirit begat force, and force matter — and thus the latent deity manifested itself as a creative energy.”

The Electric Universe

“Esoteric philosophers held that everything in nature is but a materialization of spirit. The Eternal First Cause is latent spirit, they said, and matter from the beginning.

“While conceding the idea of God to be an unthinkable abstraction to human reason, they claimed that the unerring human instinct grasped it as a reminiscence of something concrete to it, though intangible to our physical senses.”

H. P. Blavatsky, ISIS UNVEILED 1:428.

Ouroboros

Ouroboros

The Cosmology Quest

Plasma, like our more familiar electromagnetism, is the manifestation of a still greater field. Just as the “ether,” Blavatsky explains, “is one of the lower ‘principles’ of what we call primordial substance (Akasa, in Sanskrit) — one of the dreams of old, and which has now become again the dream of modern science.”

“For the Occultists,” she continues, “both ether and the Primordial Substance are a reality.”

A Conscious Universe

The Akasa is also, she says, the “Upadhi” [or foundation] “of divine thought.” Which means that consciousness or mind is embedded in all fields, which makes perfect sense when one considers the power they are proven to wield over all forms of life. Both, she says:-

“… the Alpha and the Omega of Being, are but the two facets of the one Absolute Existence.

From this perspective both God, and ‘his’ effects, are The Field. It is compelling testimony for a legitimate marriage between science and religion, and if true, objectors are advised to “forever hold your peace…”

marriage

Opposites Attract

“Science without religion is lame,
religion without science is blind.”

(Albert Einstein, “Science, Philosophy and Religion: a Symposium”, 1941)

In his article, Breaking the Cease-Fire Between Science and Religion, BeliefNet blogger David Klinghoffer writes:

“What is portrayed as the debate between religion and science feels increasingly like watching the very bitter dissolution of a doomed marriage. The relationship started out all roses and kisses, proceeded to doubts and regrets, then fights and silences, a mutually agreed separation, and finally to curses and maledictions: ‘I wish you were dead!’”

“Watered-down Deism”

Klinghoffer reflects on Biologist Jerry Coyne: “who lashes out at the accommodationists because, as he wrote in an essay in The New Republic, ‘a true harmony between science and religion requires either doing away with most people’s religion and replacing it with a watered-down deism, or polluting science with unnecessary, untestable, and unreasonable spiritual claims.’”

The synthesis of science, religion and philosophy proposed in H. P. Blavatky’s The Secret Doctrine, is no “watered-down deism.” On the contrary, its ancient occult teachings about man, nature and the universe are just what the world needs now — a love affair with Truth — not more of the same conflict and despair.

Deepak Chopra: “The Wonder of You”

Klinghoffer’s closing paragraph sums it all up exquisitely:

“But remember — alongside the secular Enlightenment view of science, there runs a parallel tradition, seeking to explain nature without preconceptions, secular or otherwise. That way of thinking still exists among individual scientists, though it is in need of a good revival.

With that tradition — older, grander, more open-minded, even more enlightened, you could say — there is no need for a truce with faith, no need for a separation, no need for a divorce.”

science_religion

The obstacles to reconciliation are numerous. Yet Theosophy offers a loftier ground where both camps will recognize that portion of The God Effect that each of them covets. What is ultimately required on both sides, is less materialism and more spiritual intuition.

No Initiation Fee

Blavatsky explains that “Outside of initiation, the ideals of contemporary religious thought must always have their wings clipped and remain unable to soar higher.” And concludes:-

“Idealistic as well as realistic thinkers, and even free-thinkers, are but the outcome and the natural product of their respective environments and periods.”

Eleusinian Mysteries

Eleusinian Mysteries

Our ideals and ideas, she says, “are only the necessary results of [our] temperaments, and the outcome of that phase of intellectual progress to which a nation, in its collectivity, has attained.”

What seems needed is the willingness and humility to train our intellects to become sensitive to the higher synthesizing power of spiritual insight. More sincere meditation and awe of the mystery and majesty of The God Effect, in every area of life, could go a long way to resolving these disputes.

The Sacred Balance

“It’s dark, there are no familiar landmarks. It’s easy to feel lost. Since time began, humans have looked up into the night sky and wondered: where did it all come from? Where do WE fit in?”

The Matter of Religion

Yes, perhaps even us Blavatsky students are not quite ready for the Great Reconciliation, and our final note, admittedly, may be somewhat off-message. But although Theosophy entered the arena in 1875 with the object of saving the sacred from desecration by materialistic science, organized religions have undeniably consistently hardened around many untenable dogmas.

Bhutan-Dochu-Pass-babasteve

Which is why people today are abandoning churches, surveys reveal, and formulating their own personal vision of the sacred — many finding inspiration from a living God within themselves and their fellows instead.

One of H. P. Blavatsky’s occult teachers wrote about the danger of materialism in religion. In closing this trilogy, it may not be overly cautionary to refer to those wise words, however painful to some of us.

A Master’s Letter

The Master (Letter No. 10.) begins by stating that one-third of all suffering and misery are due to human selfishness and greed. The other two-thirds, he says, is due to something far more sinister.

“And now after making due allowance for evils that are natural and cannot be avoided . . . I will point out the greatest, the chief cause of nearly two-thirds of the evils that pursue humanity ever since that cause became a power. It is religion under whatever form and in whatsoever nation.

“It is the sacerdotal caste, the priesthood and the Churches; it is in those illusions that man looks upon as sacred, that he has to search out the source of that multitude of evils which is the great curse of humanity, and that almost overwhelms mankind.”

“Ignorance created Gods, and cunning took advantage of the opportunity.”

Bullet-riddled Bamiyan Buddha
Bullet-riddled Bamiyan Buddha

And lastly, from the Master’s Letter No. 87, a cautionary takeaway message that all Theosophy Groups, Spiritual Shift Leaders, or aspiring Theosophist bloggers like us, might take to heart:

“Far from our thoughts may it ever be to erect a new hierarchy for the future oppression of a priestridden world.”

The inference and the message of these words in our turbulent times, seems sufficiently clear.

GROWING numbers of new thought leaders, and frontier scientists are ushering in a welcome upgrade to our western scientific and religious thought.

In addition to those we’ve featured here such as, Bruce Lipton, Dean Radin, Acharya Sanning, and Rupert Sheldrake, there are hundreds more deserving of recognition.

We are, it would appear, immersed in a revolutionary sea change of worldview.

The winds of change blowing against reductionist thought, evident throughout the 20th and now the 21st Century, were initiated in the 19th. The radical culprits were the eternal ideas of the Theosophical Movement, jump-started by new age Mother H. P. Blavatsky.

“The battle will be fierce between brutal materialism and blind fanaticism on one hand,” she writes in her article The New Cycle, “and philosophy and mysticism on the other.”

Designing Mind

A COMMON sense critic of scientific pretensions, who has wit, sanity and elevated moral intelligence all wrapped up in one person, would likely be difficult to ignore.

Such a person is Mary Midgley, dubbed by the Guardian, UK as “the most frightening philosopher in the country” — and today nearly 10 years later, at age 91, she is still receiving accolades, and taking no prisoners.

We discovered this totem-toppling English moral philosopher by chance through a brief, unassuming comment she posted in the “Letters” section of the January 3-9, 2009, NewScientist — signed simply “Mary Midgley, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.”

Her logic appeared seamless, and upon mulling her 257 insightful words over a week of lunch breaks, her ideas also felt convincingly Theosophical — indeed, strongly Blavatskian.

Fields of Dream

WHEN our rational brains are all heated up, arguing life’s complexities, that’s usually the best time to kick off our shoes and give it a rest.

“Ever drifting down the stream, lingering in the golden gleam,” Lewis Carroll wondered: “Life — what is it but a dream?”

At times, when we are faced with a critical decision, or stuck on a complex problem, sleeping or napping on it, researchers find, often leads to the right answer.

The notes of a song, the smell of burning leaves, the babbling of a mountain stream, a day-dream—all can open a door to the the non-rational, poetic mind. They can also arouse unexpected vistas when we are children.

In Wordsworth’s haunting poem “Ode on Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood,” those reveries opened for him an unexpected awareness of past lives.

Unlocking the Cage

MAINSTREAM science creates an insurmountable obstacle to understanding the real nature of life because of one belief issue.

The issue is, in attempting to unlock the nature of reality, science insists that life must be a distinct entity from matter.

This consensus is sustained because “most researchers still believe they can build from one side of nature, the physical,” says Biocentrist Dr. Robert Lanza,

… concluding crucially, “without the other side, the living.”

His opposing view is detailed by Dr. Lanza in his book Biocentrism: How Life and Consciousness are the Keys to Understanding the True Nature of the Universe.

Dr. Lanza shows that Biocentrism, an extension of the Anthropic Principle, described by the Einstein disciple physicist John Wheeler, asserts a view of life incompatible with modern materialism.

The premise of Biocentrism is, with important modifications which assert an intelligent hierarchical structure to nature, a central premise of Theosophy.

The ancients too, held that the universe is created by life and not the other way around.

Does Mind Over Matter

3rd_eyeIF you saw yourself as nothing but matter, how would that affect the way you live right now?

In the emerging science of neuroplasticity we’ve come full circle, back to Buddha, who maintained it is our thoughts that reign supreme over the physical brain and body.

If we are convinced that Nature is more than just a “fortuitous concurrence of atoms,” can that belief change how we manage our natural resources?

What if we believed that “everything in the Universe, throughout all its kingdoms, is conscious,” as Theosophy asserts? And that everything is “endowed with a consciousness of its own kind and on its own plane of perception?”

British astronomer, Sir Arthur Eddington, epitomized the scientific controversy, commenting on the Uncertainty Principle in quantum physics, in 1927, when he remarked: Continue reading

“THE future ain’t what it used to be,” baseball’s Yogi Berra quipped, with trademark deadpan.

Indeed, the emerging “new science” can be as unreadable as a deftly pitched knuckle ball.

The frontier sciences today are one-hand-clapping Zen paradoxes, compared to the old standard models. And atheists worldwide are crying foul.

A spiritual worldview is still shaky as a new pitcher at a championship game. Yet many, layman and scientists alike, are celebrating the rebirth, and choosing to embrace The Shift it represents.

Fresh waves of strangeness are gaining momentum: new physics, new psychology, new biology, new cosmology, new archaeology, new consciousness—all are challenging the old reductionist models of how the universe works.

Everyone is putting their own spin on the pitch. Even religion is getting into the game.

In a review this week of Barbara Bradley Hagerty’s new book, Fingerprints of God: The Search for the Science of Spirituality, Mark Galli, writing in Christianity Today, comments:

Fingerprints of God does reinforce the reality that the brain and spiritual experiences are connected.  … Materialists conclude that mystical experiences are nothing but the product of brain chemistry. But Hagerty rightly objects: “If there were an ‘Other’ who wanted to communicate with us, of course He or She or It would use the brain to do so. … Of course God would use the chemistry of our brains to create visions.”

Parapsychology is also gaining new adherents: reincarnation, karma, psi phenomena, meditation, yoga, meridian tapping, intentionality. Once described by Einstein as “spooky action at a distance,” quantum strangeness is wormholing its way into our everyday life.

More PhD’s are pitching books and cinema on sacred geometry, divine cosmos, electric universes, global unity, natural healing, than ever before.

Back in 1888, H. P. Blavatsky, flamboyant Foundress of the Theosophical Renaissance, saw all this coming.

Physics or Metaphysics?

Blavatsky

H. P. Blavatsky

Blavatsky, often referred to as “The Mother of the New Age,” predicted the immanent demise of both scientific and religious materialism—and their inevitable purification, and final synthesis.

She knew somehow—but we didn’t understand at the time—what a game-changer the discovery of the electron would become.

In her Secret Doctrine she wrote:

“Between this time and 1897 there will be a large rent made in the Veil of Nature, and materialistic science will receive a death-blow.”

electron2The death-blow was the “electron,” demonstrated in the year 1896, by physicist Joseph J. Thomson. He received a Nobel Prize for his discovery! But, as it turned out, the electron was a can of worms in disguise:

“The discovery of the electron suggested that it may be a subparticle of the atom. But such an idea resisted serious consideration, because it would lay in ruin the idea of the indivisibility of the atom, held since the time of Democritus.” (Sunrise Magazine)

Yet, for all the wriggliness, Blavatsky would not be content to sit back and cut bait. She immediately chased the big fish, announcing in The Secret Doctrine (I:520):

“It is on the doctrine of the illusive nature of matter, and the infinite divisibility of the atom, that the whole science of Occultism is built.

Redux: The Aim of The Secret Doctrine

The aim of this work may be thus stated: to show that Nature is not “a fortuitous concurrence of atoms,” and to assign to man his rightful place in the scheme of the Universe; to rescue from degradation the archaic truths which are the basis of all religions; and to uncover, to some extent, the fundamental unity from which they all spring; finally, to show that the occult side of Nature has never been approached by the Science of modern civilization. (SD 1:viii)

Matter, The Shadow of Consciousness

Throughout recorded history, intelligent designs of humans are seen everywhere—art, architecture, computers, and labor-saving gadgets of all kinds. Many of our modern inventions were, and are, more self-serving and resource depleting, than intelligent.

Unlike ancient cultures, our boasted science materializes explanations of everything. Its first, and often only response to the strange and mysterious, is to attempt to “recreate” and reproduce them in a laboratory, to explain them away as only “man-made.” They would struggle to replicate a believable bird’s nest.

Neo-Nonsense

It is the current vogue of Neo-Darwinism, to refer all strangeness to a designer-less universe—to accidental, undirected, randomly selected mutations.

Yet, Einstein, who evidently didn’t get the same memo, famously declared “god does not throw dice.”

The Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines, Peru

Archaeoastronomical creations, like Stonehenge and the Pyramids; and the enigmatic Nazca Lines are down-to-earth evidence of design.

Numerous hieroglyphs, mounds, dolmens, geoglyphs, petrographs found around the world—all suggest there is more beneath the surface of reductionist reality than is admitted, or understood.

For the mysterious master artists and scientists, the Circle Makers, like their ancient forebears, use Nature as their canvas—creating forms of unrivaled beauty, symmetry and symbology.

Design rules the ground and skies, from the tiny cell to the “music of the spheres,” and beyond—to billions of far-off galactic masterpieces.

Swirling News

On the ground today, as we update this post, a new formation appeared in an English barley field.

Temporary Temples‘ photographers and archivists, Steve and Karen Alexander, describe it as “An absolutely stunning new circle … Located at a place called Kingstone Coombes, it is close to Waylan’s Smithy on the Wiltshire-Oxfordshire border, site of many formations over the past few years.”

"Oannes"

"Oannes"

“By our approximations it is 500-600ft in length and the jelly-fish-like design is one of the most breathtaking circles we have ever seen. Note the seven circles in the tail and the seven tentacles. Seven in a very prodigious and numinous number.”

“2009 is turning out to be an very special season…”

A Theosophical Explanation

Amphibios – Annedoti – Oannes

The Greek word amphibios means simply “life on two planes,” from amphi, “on both sides,” and bios, “life.” The word was often applied in antiquity to those men who, though still wearing a human form, had made themselves almost divine through knowledge, and lived as much in the spiritual supersensuous regions as on earth.

One sees why Occultism places Oannes and the other Annedoti in the group of those ancient “adepts” who were called “marine” or “water dragons”Nagas.

Water typified their human origin (as it is a symbol of earth and matter and also of purification), in distinction to the “fire Nagas” or the immaterial spiritual Beings, whether celestial Bodhisattvas or Planetary Dhyanis, also regarded as the instructors of mankind.

The hidden meaning becomes clear to the Occultist, once he is told that this being (Oannes) was accustomed to pass the day among men, teaching; and when the sun was set, he retired again into the sea, passing the night in the deep, “for he was amphibious,“i.e., he belonged to two planes; the spiritual and the physical.

Bold Nous World

Even “Nature cannot be ‘unconscious,’” Helena Blavatsky wrote, rather “it is the emanation from, and thus an aspect (on the manifested plane) of the absolute consciousness.” And, as she often did, hurled the gauntlet to materialism:

“Where is that daring man who would presume to deny to vegetation and even to minerals a consciousness of their own. All he can say is, that this consciousness is beyond his comprehension.”

Theosophical philosophy points to Plato’s “Nous,” a godlike kind of force, that Kingstone Coombes, Wayland's Smithy, Oxon2is “the animating Soul, immanent in every atom, manifested in man, latent in the stone.” And, it “has different degrees of power.”

Occult Symbols and Glyphs

These different degrees are often referred to as “hierarchies.” Entities, like the Circle Makers, have evidently been commissioned to work directly with Earth’s humanity, through symbols. The Secret Doctrine (1:274):

The whole Kosmos is guided, controlled, and animated by almost endless series of Hierarchies of sentient Beings, each having a mission to perform…”

“.. such is the mysterious power of Occult symbolism, that the facts which have actually occupied countless generations of initiated seers and prophets to marshal, to set down and explain, in the bewildering series of evolutionary progress, are all recorded on a few pages of geometrical signs and glyphs.”

Barbury Castle formation, May 24, 2009

Barbury Castle, UK - May 24, 2009

“This pantheistic idea of a general Spirit-Soul pervading all Nature,” Blavatsky reminded us, “is the oldest of all the philosophical notions.”

These are the same “innate, eternal, and self-existing Ideas” of Plato.

The “Absolute Consciousness,” … “behind” phenomena, which is only termed unconsciousness in the absence of any element of personality, transcends human conception. Man, unable to form one concept except in terms of empirical phenomena, is powerless from the very constitution of his being to raise the veil that shrouds the majesty of the Absolute.

Quite conveniently, now, we can point to the scientifically documented, and publicized, Crop Circle phenomena. How much more “empirical” evidence do you need? Complex, and mathematically exact geometrical formations, embedded in a remote farmer’s field in less than a minute—with no footprints or broken stems—all in the dark of night?

Where’s the Belief?

If Nature is sentient, and evinces intelligent design at every turn, who or what is she? And even if she is not blind after all, how is the matter, of which she is composed, assembled and arranged?

Is evolution still a blind, self-directed process, as neo-nonsense claims? Or is there a real Neo, who shapes the matrix, hiding somewhere off-camera?

The answers to these questions remains inferential. The “who” or “what” hasn’t revealed itself directly yet. But the phenomenon of crop circles, dropping out of nowhere into something, is substantial evidence of design, one that is neither random or blind.

Lights Forming Crop Circles

Mathematics Codes and Geometric Patterns

The most complex, “mind-boggling” crop circle ever to be seen in Britain was been discovered in a barley field in Wiltshire.

The circle is a coded representation of pi to the 10th significant figure The formation, measuring 150ft in diameter, is apparently a coded image representing the first 10 digits, 3.141592654, of pi.

The formation, measuring 150ft in diameter, is apparently a coded image representing the first 10 digits, 3.141592654, of pi.

It is has appeared in a field near Barbury Castle, an iron-age hill fort above Wroughton, Wilts, and has been described by astrophysicists as “mind-boggling.”

Michael Reed, an astrophysicist, said:

“The tenth digit has even been correctly rounded up. The little dot near the centre is the decimal point.

“The code is based on 10 angular segments with the radial jumps being the indicator of each segment.

“Starting at the centre and counting the number of one-tenth segments in each section contained by the change in radius clearly shows the values of the first 10 digits in the value of pi.”

Lucy Pringle, a researcher of crop formations, said: “This is an astounding development – it is a seminal event.”

Mathematics codes and geometric patterns have long been an important factor in crop circle formations. One of the best known formations showed the image of a highly complex set of shapes known as The Julia Set, 13 years ago.

The power of consciousness itself, is working through each of us, Eckhart Tolle says of the current cycle. Something in the collective consciousness wants that change, and we must try to be open to it.

We have chosen the mysterious crop circle phenomena, this week, as a stimulating reminder of ways that lead towards that change—becoming more consciously aware of the divine within us, and around us.

A Shift in Consciousness

“Mankind–the majority at any ratehates to think for itself, Blavatsky comments. “It resents as an insult the humblest invitation to step for a moment outside the old well-beaten tracks, and, judging for itself, to enter into a new path in some fresh direction.”

But, as we establish more secure bonds to our spiritual mind, Theosophy teaches, self-knowledge arises, and old sense-driven habits of thought fade away naturally. These higher links are forged, most securely, through service and love, say the wisdom traditions.

Self-Knowledge

“Self-knowledge of this kind is unattainable by what men usually call ‘self-analysis,’ Blavatsky once said. “It is not reached by reasoning or any brain process—for it is the awakening to consciousness of the Divine nature of man.”

“To obtain this knowledge is a greater achievement than to command the elements or to know the future.”

But without parents, teachers, mentors and friends, “such knowledge—such intuitive and certain knowledge,” would be much more difficult. The odds of losing our way, are often overwhelming.

“That Which Ye Sow, Ye Reap”

Peaks Down - May 9, 2009

All true Masters teach that “self-knowledge is of loving deeds the child.” And we prove this to ourselves every time we help another in need, with no thought of return. Every small effort we make, adds to our inner strength, and to theirs.

Sow kindly acts and thou shalt reap their fruition,” say the Golden Precepts. “Help Nature and work on with her; and Nature will regard thee as one of her creators and make obeisance.”

“It is the Spiritual evolution of the inner, immortal man that forms the fundamental tenet in the Occult Sciences.”

This shows that the immortal part of us, our True Self, is the Prototype  masquerading as the Humantype in this earthstate of consciousness. As Teilhard de Chardin wrote, “we are spiritual beings having a human experience,” not the reverse. We are ambassadors from spirit whose duty is to help Nature—not injure and abuse her—but to serve and learn from her.

The “circle-makers,” the spiritual Prototypes, are our spiritmates, guides and protectors. They watch and stimulate us from inner planes, but they are invisible to average humanity. In reality, the higher state of consciousness, where they live, is also humanity’s forgotten residence.

We are prodigal sons, and wanderlusting “Self-gods”—Arjunas struggling to win the tests of our existence here—and ultimately to regain full self-consciousness of our heritage and purpose. But, like Arjuna, we are never without the help of Krishna, the Higher Self.  The Secret Doctrine explains:

Spiritual Mathematics

“The closer the approach to one’s Prototype, ‘in Heaven,’ the better for the mortal whose personality was chosen, by his own personal deity (the seventh principle), as its terrestrial abode.

“For, with every effort of will toward purification and unity with that ‘Self-god,’ one of the lower rays breaks and the spiritual entity of man is drawn higher and ever higher to the ray that supersedes the first, until, from ray to ray, the inner man is drawn into the one and highest beam of the Parent-Sun.

We Are All One

“Thus, ‘the events of humanity do run coordinately with the number forms,’ since the single units of that humanity proceed one and all from the same source — the central and its shadow, the visible Sun.

“For the equinoxes and solstices, the periods and various phases of the Solar course, astronomically and numerically expressed, are only the concrete symbols of the eternally living verity, though they do seem abstract ideas to uninitiated mortals.

“And this explains the extraordinary numerical coincidences with geometrical relations …” SD 1:639

Dreaming and Waking Symbols

Ridgeway, June 15, 2008

Ridgeway, June 15, 2008

We are, in our ultimate essence, beings of light. This existence, like the dreamless state we enter every night, can only be faintly symbolized on our brain-plane of perception, remembered as symbolic dream ideas on waking.

In our developmental condition, the knowledge of the dreamless state is not accessed through direct recollection or remembrance, but is a “reminiscence.”

“A Sleep and a Forgetting”

As explained in Isis Unveiled 1:xiv, the purpose of deep meditational and sleep states, is to “arouse in us the reminiscence of that higher world that we once inhabited.”

All Cannings Bridge, May 22, 2009

All Cannings Bridge, May 22, 2009

The “us,” referred to, is ourselves as reincarnating Self-gods. The teaching of the differing memory systems we use, is further explained in The Key to Theosophy 123-133:

“Memory is a faculty depending entirely on the more or less healthy and normal functioning of our physical brain; and remembrance and recollection are the attributes and handmaidens of that memory. But reminiscence is an entirely different thing.

“- we call reminiscence the memory of the soul. And it is this memory which gives the assurance to almost every human being, whether he understands it or not, of his having lived before and having to live again. Indeed, as Wordsworth has it:”

“Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting,
The soul that rises with us, our life’s star,
hath elsewhere had its setting,
And cometh from afar.”

The “Seven Sons”

Morgan's Hill, May 2009

Morgan's Hill, May 2009

Theosophy teaches we are sevenfold beings. In the English and Sanskrit terms: Spirit (Atma-Buddhi) is having a human, (Manas-Kama) experience, aided by the life force (Prana) and pattern body (Astral,) in a molecular body (Silutha Sarira.)

Each of our inner “sheaths,” or states of consciousness, is a “ray” from one of those “seven sons,” symbolized spiritual prototypes, or hierarchies. Actual beings, living within the interwoven consciousness of the Earth.

The Secret Doctrine 1:430, translates this into a uniquely mystical, symbolic language:

It is then only in this “light” (of consciousness) of mental and physical perception, that practical Occultism can throw this into visibility by geometrical figures.

When closely studied, [the light of the Logos] will yield…a scientific explanation of the real, objective, existence of the “Seven sons of the divine Sophia.”

By means of other, yet undiscovered keys, with regard to Humanity, these “Seven Sons” and their numberless emanations, centres of energy personified, are an absolute necessity.

“Make away with them, and the mystery of Being and Mankind will never be unriddled, not even closely approached.”

An Undiscovered Key

Science will never understand mysteries of the spiritual and terrestrial aspects of human beings, on this plane of life, Blavatsky says, “if it rejects the evidence of the oldest records in the world, and refuses from the hand of the legitimate Guardians of the mysteries of Nature the key to Universal Symbology.

“The prototypes or ideas of things exist first on the plane of Divine eternal Consciousness,” H. P. Blavatsky wrote, and from there, these are reflected on our Earth plane of life.”

“As Above, So Below”

(Hermes Trismegistus)

Barely visible from the ground, and often appearing in remote fields around the world, the breathtaking geometry, and artistry of the crop circles is fully revealed—symbolically and literally—only from above.

crop_mayan-crop-2004

The power and presence of these unusual symbolic events can not be underestimated—because occult wisdom has always been closely associated with geometrical symbols.

“Without the help of symbology (with its seven departments, of which the moderns know nothing) no ancient Scripture can ever be correctly understood.” (SD 1:305)

There will always be hoaxers, of course, so long as there are the cynical among us. Yet it is a proven fact, that the majority of the crop formations are not man-made. (BLT Research Team, Inc.)

Who knows the possibilities of the future?. . .

“An era of disenchantment and rebuilding will soon begin–nay, has already begun. The cycle has almost run its course—a new one is about to begin, and the future pages of history may contain full proof that–

If ancestry can be in aught believed,
Descending spirits have conversed with man
And told him secrets of the world unknown.”

The Sacred Tribe of Heroes

The Secret Doctrine offers proof of the wide dissemination of symbolic teachings, from the Neolithic, Egyptian and Greek secret societies, the Middle Ages, the Age of Enlightenment, to Freemasonry. We see it even in modern physics—represented in Fritjof Kapra’s “The Tao of Physics.”

“The Secret Doctrine was the universally diffused religion of the ancient and prehistoric world. Proofs of its diffusion, authentic records of its history, a complete chain of documents, showing its character and presence in every land, together with the teaching of all its great adepts, exist to this day in the secret crypts of libraries belonging to the Occult Fraternity.” (SD 1:xxxiv)

Synesius, Wisdom of the Egyptians

“Yet you must not think that the gods are without employment, or that their descent to this earth is perpetual. For they descend according to orderly periods of time, for the purpose of imparting a beneficent impulse in the republics of mankind.

For there is indeed in the terrestrial abode the sacred tribe of heroes who pay attention to mankind, and who are able to give them assistance even in the smallest concerns. . .This heroic tribe is, as it were, a colony from the gods established here in order that this terrene abode may not be left destitute of a better nature.”

Progressive Awakenings

“Whatever plane our consciousness may be acting in, both we and the things belonging to that plane are, for the time being, our only realities. As we rise in the scale of development we perceive that during the stages through which we have passed we mistook shadows for realities, and the upward progress of the Ego is a series of progressive awakenings, each advance bringing with it the idea that now, at last, we have reached ‘reality;’ but only when we shall have reached the absolute Consciousness, and blended our own with it, shall we be free from the delusions produced by Maya [illusion].” (SD 1:40)

A Verified Interaction Between
Human Consciousness and the Circle Makers

by Janet Ossebaard (Circular Site)

“On 27 July 1999, an interesting experiment took place. Japanese crop circle researcher Maki Massau took a group of 11 Japanese people to the formation opposite Silbury Hill at Avebury (Wiltshire, UK) to carry out a meditation experiment.

“Sitting in the beautiful formation at sunset, the group sent out a prayer, asking the Circle Makers to create a new formation with four clear features. The formation had to appear that night, close to Silbury Hill, slightly to the West, and containing a Japanese element. If such a crop circle was to appear the next morning, they would know for sure their prayer was heard…

crop4“After finishing this meditation, they decided to extend the request. They drove to a formation at Cherhill and sent out their prayer into the cosmos once again. As they did this, they saw a large ball of light suddenly descend from the skies to just above Cherhill. Then the light ascended once again and disappeared…

“After this phase they went on to Oliver’s Castle, from where the prayer was sent out once again. Then the experiment was finished and they went back to their hotel.

“The next morning they drove off to the local airfield, in order to find out if any new formations had been reported yet. Their excitement rose when one of the pilots confirmed that indeed a new formation had been discovered that morning. He too had seen it at Beckhampton, slightly West of Silbury Hill.

“When Maki Massau asked the pilot if he could describe the formation, the pilot explained something about a piece of paper folded over another piece of paper. He was looking for the right word, when a colleague helped him: ‘Just like Japanese origami’ …

“Maki and his group were delighted when – only minutes later – they flew over the formation. This magnificent pattern was their formation all right, beyond a shadow of a doubt. It had all four features: it was located close to Silbury Hill, a bit to the West, it had appeared that night, and it clearly contained Japanese elements: origami, and it also represented a common Japanese family crest.”

Eckhart Tolle – Transformation of Consciousness

We should be opening more to what wants to happen on this planet, Eckhart Tolle says, but it can only be realized through each individual person. Each new realization helps others to shift in consciousness, which is necessary at this time. The question for humanity is to either shift and evolve together, or perish together.

Crop Circle Geometry

“Geometry, in the hands of the crop circles, becomes a resonant language of intelligent intent, which both contains the message and teaches the syntax of its meaning.

“The geometry is thus both the message and the meaning, and I feel this geometry to be consistently of a higher order than that which you or I would arrive at. Its simplicity and its ingenuity draws us upwards and subtly encourages an opening up of the mind.” -Allan Brown

Seers and Psychics

IN the surreal landscape of Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass, Alice wonders what the world is like on the other side of a mirror.

To her surprise, Alice is able to pass into it, as if into the astral world, and experience an alternate existence.

A puzzled Alice discovers a book with looking-glass poetry called “Jabberwocky,” which she can read only by holding it up to a mirror.

This is a clear reference to occultism’s ‘astral light,’ where the images of everything are stored in reverse to those on our normal terrestrial plane.

In 1871, mediumship and table-tipping were all the rage, detailed in Mitch Horowitz’s recent book Occult America. Understandably, Carroll’s sequel to Alice in Wonderland was wildly popular at the time.

Clairvoyance and psychic powers have always fascinated the public. But then, as now, they were considered nonsensical by mainstream scientists.

Over Troubled Waters

polarbearWE emphasized in a recent post how important our thoughts are, and how compassion can lead to far-reaching, practical results.

When the Inner Ruler, our immortal Self, is actively engaged no achievement is beyond our reach. Yet, an elevated state of consciousness is only the first step.

Krishna required of his disciple Arjuna (who is everyman), that he be a “man of action,” not merely a right thinking one.

An Earth Day Message

Yoga,” Krishna taught, “is skill in the performance of actions.” This seems very different from the image of a yogi sitting cross-legged, hardly breathing, with eyes closed.

Carlyle

Carlyle

Krishna’s teaching is exemplified in the high inspiration of Carlyle:

“The end of man is an action and not a thought, though it were the noblest.”

The Global Oneness Project

A Law of Service

Practically speaking, what are these “actions” we should take? What exactly are we doing for ‘others?’ It would seem they should be not just efforts to achieve personal self-enlightenment, but to perform service. “Self-knowledge is of loving deeds the child,” according to The Voice of the Silence.

Enlightenment and loving service to others, by this account, are bound together in an endless, spiritual feedback. “Compassion is no attribute,” says the Voice again, “It is the LAW of LAWS.” Teacher Annie Leonard took practical action to help herself, and the entire planet with what has become a national campaign titled “The Story of Stuff.”

The Story of Stuff, with Annie Leonard

What’s Good for Others

Judge

Judge

This is the road less traveled, the “small old path” spoken of by all true Masters.  Those who seek this path unselfishly, have “many duties to perform,” says W. Q. Judge:

“His duty to mankind, his family – nature – himself and his creator—but duty here means something very different from that which is conveyed by the time and lip-worn word, Duty. Our comprehension of the term is generally based upon society’s or man’s selfish interpretation. It is quite generally thought that duty means the performance of a series of acts which others think I ought to perform, whereas, it more truly means the performance of actions by me which I know are good for others, or the wisest at the moment.” (Am I My Brother’s Keeper?)

As important as good intentions are, hell is famously paved with them. A great theosophical Master was adamant in his assertion that “motives are vapours, as attenuated as the atmospheric moisture.”  And like steam fed into an engine, “the practical value of good motives is best seen when they take the form of deeds.”

The Universe – A Living System

Higher Calling

Julia Butterfly Hill

Julia Butterfly Hill

“Among many ideas brought forward through the theosophical movement,” says William Q. Judge, “there are three which should never be lost sight of.”  In Judge’s first idea we recognize what is meant in the repeated phrase of Blavatsky, “theosophy pure and simple.”

“The first idea is, that there is a great Cause – in the sense of an enterprise — called the Cause of Sublime Perfection and Human Brotherhood.

This rests upon the essential unity of the whole human family, and is a possibility because sublimity in perfectness and actual realization of brotherhood on every plane of being are one and the same thing.”

Practical Theosophy, in this broader sense, Blavatsky writes, ” is not one Science, but embraces every science in life, moral and physical. …

“It may, in short, be justly regarded as the universal ‘coach,’ a tutor of world-wide knowledge and experience…”

Vanishing Glaciers

Tom Gaylord’s glacier photos tell a story, in pictures, about Alaska’s beautiful but dwindling glaciers. The rapid retreat of glaciers throughout the world is an undeniable observation, and that human activities are the major reason for this is a scientific fact.

When we elevate our inner thought life, this naturally leads to a focus on service to others, not for oneself alone. H. P. Blavatsky defined this highest duty as that which is owed to all men:

Blavatsky

Blavatsky

Duty is that which is due to Humanity, to our fellow-men, neighbours, family, and especially that which we owe to all those who are poorer and more helpless than we are ourselves.

This is a debt which, if left unpaid during life, leaves us spiritually insolvent and moral bankrupts in our next incarnation. Theosophy is the quintessence of duty.” (The Key to Theosophy, p. 229)

Three Areas of Oneness

Whether you are moved to selfless service through the precepts of Krishna, Buddha or Jesus, or any other great teacher, makes no difference.  These teachings are universal, and what is more, not confined solely to the human kingdom.

“Brotherhood,” Theosophy teaches, “is a fact in nature.” And if humankind is inseparable from the whole of nature, as the ancients teach, our duty towards other kingdoms is self-evident.

Thoreau

Thoreau

“One thing is certain – that we had best be doing something in good earnest henceforth forever—that’s an indispensable philosophy.”

-Thoreau

From our last post:

“It is this action and interaction, this true brotherhood and sisterhood, in which each shall live for all and all for each, which is one of the fundamental Theosophical principles that every Theosophist should be bound, not only to teach, but to carry out in his or her individual life.”

The Jataka Tales are short stories depicting reincarnations of the Buddha, in various animal forms. A fascinating, and soul-instructive journey — but that will appear as a separate article.

However, one Tale in particular is related to today’s post:

The Global Oneness Project is exploring how the radically simple notion of interconnectedness can be lived in our increasingly complex world. Since 2006, we’ve been traveling the globe gathering stories from creative and courageous people who base their lives and work on the understanding that we bear great responsibility for each other and our shared world.

bridgeA Bridge Over Troubled Water

When you’re weary, feelin’ small,
When tears are in your eyes, I’ll dry them all.
I’m on your side oh, when times get rough and friends just can’t be found.
Like a bridge over troubled water, I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down.

When you’re down and out, when you’re on the street,
When evening falls so hard I will comfort you.
I’ll take your part, oh, when darkness comes and pain is all around.
Like a bridge over troubled water, I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down.

Thoughts That Count

redwood51ONE of Helena Blavatsky’s adept teachers famously remarked in Mahatma Letters, “thoughts are things.”

This was also Buddha’s first principle: the individual, and the world as a whole, rises or falls on the power of thought and intention.

Why should this be?

A line from Shakespeare’s Hamlet is suggestive: “there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”

Thoughts are the seeds of Karma,” is a familiar Theosophical mantra.

The First Duty

The sayings of the Buddha were extracted out of the stories of Buddha’s life forming The Dhammapada, which means “the path of dharma.” Not meant to be a dogmatic religion, static and unchanging, it is rather a path anyone can follow. Buddha’s first saying is:

“ALL that we are is the result of what we have thought: all that we are is founded on our thoughts and formed of our thoughts.”

Is it any wonder that the first object of the Theosophical Movement is Universal Brotherhood and Sisterhood? This is humanity’s first duty, our communal “Dharma.”

“Real Human Solidarity”

rowing“If the action of one reacts on the lives of all, and this is the true scientific idea, then it is only by all men becoming brothers and all women sisters, and by all practising in their daily lives truebrotherhood and true sisterhood , that the real human solidarity, which lies at the root of the elevation of the human race, can ever be attained.

“It is this action and interaction, this true brotherhood and sisterhood, in which each shall live for all and all for each, which is one of the fundamental Theosophical principles that every Theosophist should be bound, not only to teach, but to carry out in his or her individual life.”
- H. P. Blavatsky

– has lived in vain.”
(Voice of The Silence)

Right Understanding

The kinds of thoughts that count, then, ought to have their basis in one fundamental idea: Universal unity and causation.

Without a recognition of this, nothing else can be understood. As biologist Rupert Sheldrake explained, this is why “dogs know when their owners are coming home.”

Occult science explains why universal unity is a fact in Nature. The principle is rooted in this primary Theosophical teaching:

“The fundamental Law in that system is the One homogeneous divine substance-principle, the one radical cause.” (SD 1:273)

The Egg Knows

Sacred Egg of Heliopolis and Typhon’s Egg.

The Mundane Egg was an important symbol with the ancients, and for good reason. It represented the “One Life,” or matrix, in which all things and beings on this earth are inextricably entangled. As Blavatsky states:

“The Egg was incorporated as a sacred sign in the cosmogony of every people on the Earth, and was revered both on account of its form and its inner mystery.”

Making use of a different kind of egg, there is now evidence, from Princeton scientists, that a universal substratum does indeed exist.

In their experiments, “EGG” refers to “Electrogaiagram,” a play on Electroencephalogram, and reflects similarities to the EEG technology used to record brain waves. This NBC News video clip explains:

Crystallizing Thought

Our thoughts impact everything: our health, relationships, moods, careers — and we now realize, even the world at large is similarly affected by our thoughts—and shows it.

This important discovery about the power of thought, was confirmed in experiments conducted by IONS senior scientist Dean Radin, on Japanese researcher Dr. Masaru Emoto’s work with water crystals. Dr. Radin concludes:

“The hypothesis that water ‘treated’ with intention can affect ice crystals formed from that water was pilot tested under double-blind conditions. A group of approximately 2,000 people in Tokyo focused positive intentions towards water samples located inside an electromagnetically shielded room in California.” …

“Results indicated that crystals from the treated water were given higher scores for aesthetic appeal than those from the control water, lending support to the hypothesis.”

Confirming, Blavatsky writes in Isis Unveiled 1:207:

“Everything lives and perishes through magnetism one thing affects another one, even at great distances … may be influenced to health and disease by the power of this sympathy, at any time, and notwithstanding the intervening space.”

The Roots of Thought

Redwood Roots

Faith, imagination, desire, intention, will, motive and feeling — lead to every state of consciousness we experience — yet all have their origin, and all are rooted in thought. Just as flowers and trees are rooted.

The towering redwoods all began life as a tiny seed. When planted in fertile soil, the growth process begins, leading to irrevocable effects — and, like our thought-effects, difficult to undo.

Blavatsky gives more detail in Studies in Occultism (excerpts):

“Imagination is a potent help in every event of our lives. Imagination acts on Faith, and both are the draughtsmen who prepare the sketches for Will to engrave, more or less deeply, on the rocks of obstacles and opposition with which the path of life is strewn.”

Paracelsus

Paracelsus

“Says Paracelsus: ‘Faith must confirm the imagination, for faith establishes the will . . . Determined will is the beginning of all magical operations. . . . It is because men do not perfectly imagine and believe the result, that the arts (of magic) are uncertain, while they might be perfectly certain.’

“This is all the secret. Half, if not two-thirds of our ailings and diseases are the fruit of our imagination and fears. Destroy the latter and give another bent to the former, and nature will do the rest.”

Susan Boyle

LONDON — “A middle-aged volunteer church worker with the voice of an angel is Britain’s latest unlikely showbiz star. Susan Boyle, 47, wowed judges and audience alike when she performed on television contest “Britain’s Got Talent.” By Tuesday, a video clip of Boyle’s performance on Internet site YouTube has been watched more than 2.7 million times.” - AP/Huffington Post – JILL LAWLESS, April 17, 2009

“Watching an older person—especially an older person who doesn’t seem very hip—prove she still has time to emerge from her cocoon is exciting because it reminds us that we can still sort through our own problems. No matter how old we are, we’re dealing with something, and it’s refreshing to be told that that’s okay.”  Mark Blankenship, Pop Culture Critic

One World,
One Humanity

(Excerpts: The Theosophical Movement – Vol. 71, No. 3))

“Today humanity is divided into sects and cults, castes, creeds and classes, religious denominations and political ideologies, so that instead of bearing love and friendship for one another, nations and races are engaged in opposing and attacking one another.

“One world and one humanity has been the cry for ages. Poets and philosophers have dreamed of it. Statesmen and politicians all over the world are trying to find a solution to the great problem of disunity. They have not succeeded yet because they do not have the right approach to this important problem.

“It is not through legislatures that harmony and peace can be established between different nations. What is needed is a change of mind and of heart on the basis of a correct understanding of the fundamental ideas and facts as given out by great Teachers down the ages.

“These ideas were resuscitated for the benefit of our civilization by Madame Blavatsky. The ideal of a united world appeals to the common man as to the scholar; but, unless a thorough understanding of the source of that unity is acquired, it is not possible to put into practice this ideal or to bring about the required result.”

“Stand By Me”

“Mark Johnson, the producer of a remarkable documentary about the simple but transformative power of music: PLAYING FOR CHANGE: PEACE THROUGH MUSIC. The film brings together musicians from around the world — blues singers in a waterlogged New Orleans, chamber groups in Moscow, a South African choir — to collaborate on songs familiar and new, in the effort to foster a new, greater understanding of our commonality.”

PLAYING FOR CHANGE is a movement uniting people all over the world through music and inspiration. It all began about seven years ago as my producing partner, Whitney Kroenke Burditt, and I assembled a group of like-minded people with cameras and a mobile recording studio. We embarked on a journey across the globe in search of music and human connections.” -Mark Johnson

The Real Jesus

EASTER week is Christianity’s “Jesus week,” and usually finds the secular media waging its annual knee-jerk assault on Christian beliefs.

Neither the media nor Christianity seem to know anything about the real Jesus, so we decided to enter the fray as truth-seekers, backed by ancient theosophical teachings.

The cover of Newsweek (April 4, 2009) dramatizes “The Decline and Fall of Christian America, ” and is subtitled “The percentage of self-identified Christians has fallen 10 points in the past two decades. How that statistic explains who we are now—and what, as a nation, we are about to become.”

So popular was the article, that runner-up news magazine, bloggers noted, was forced to disable comments on the 2009 Jon Meacham’s lead article.

The article, titled The End of Christian America, received over 5,000 comments, bloggers reported, “making the site wobbly.”

THE famous meditation of John Donne, “never send to know for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee,” highlights two Theosophical principles:

First, the affirmation that there is no isolation, that nature and all mankind are interconnected — and second, karmic responsibility.

“It’s one thing to fashion a particular work of art, sculpture, painting, a worthy accomplishment,” Thoreau wrote, “but much greater is the creation of one’s life.”

“…to exemplify the highest potential imagined, it is the highest of loving artistic accomplishments,” he believed.

Science or Spirituality

"Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind."

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS are rising in many scientific circles that are beginning to hint at a new non-reductionist and spiritual view of life.

We are awed by the sincerity, wisdom and compassion of the brave men and women of these new frontier sciences.

The materialistic sciences, H. P. Blavatsky predicted “will be driven out of their position, not by spiritual, theosophical, or any other physical or even mental phenomena.”

“But simply by the enormous gaps and chasms that open daily — and will still be opening before them.”

“One discovery follows the other,” she wrote, “until they are finally knocked off their feet by the ninth wave of simple common sense.” Continue reading
