One Absolutely Fundamental Law in the Universe

THAT modern saying ‘what goes around comes around’ is almost certainly a instinctive memory of karma, the omnipresent law of the universe.

The wisdom of karma insists that every fleeting moment eventually returns, like a relay race, to its original place plus the experience gained. And this law is an obligatory pilgrimage for everyone.

The theosophical universal law of evolution insists that every person’s actions whether good or bad,” as Wikipedia has it, “will often have consequences for that person.” And the consequences, we could add, include everyone in the human race and nature as a whole.

The ancients always insisted on the absolute universality of periodicity, the law “of flux and reflux, ebb and flow,” according to The Secret Doctrine, “which physical science has observed and recorded in all departments of nature.”

“An alternation such as that of Day and Night, Life and Death, Sleeping and Waking, is a fact so common, so perfectly universal and without exception,,” says this teaching, “that it is easy to comprehend that in it we see one of the absolutely fundamental laws of the universe.”

This teaching is set forth in The Secret Doctrine as the Second Fundamental Proposition, a universal law sourced from the Perennial Philosophy (on which the teachings are based):

A metaphor “will convey the idea still more clearly,” Mme. Blavatsky wrote about the basics of the teaching (Volume 1, p. 2): “the out-breathing of the ‘unknown essence’ produces the world; and an inhalation causes it to disappear.”

“This process has been going on from all eternity, and our present universe is but one of an infinite series, which had no beginning and will have no end.”

East Meets West

Theosophy, it is said: “…will live on into and through the twentieth century. It will gradually leaven and permeate the great mass of thinking and intelligent people with its large-minded and noble ideas of Religion, Duty, and Philanthropy.”

“Slowly but surely it will burst asunder the iron fetters of creeds and dogmas, of social and caste prejudices; it will break down racial and national antipathies and barriers, and will open the way to the practical realisation of the Brotherhood of all men. Through its teaching, through the philosophy which it has rendered accessible and intelligible to the modern mind, the West will learn to understand and appreciate the East at its true value.”

Cyclic Bangs

Some modern mathematical physicists like Cambridge University’s Neil Turok (below), in a radical new theory concerning the ‘big bang’ want to correct the  standard scientific version to include the teaching of  ‘what goes round comes around.’ 

They are suggesting it is a cyclic event that consists of regularly repeating ‘big bangs.’

“The Big Bang was big, but it wasn’t the beginning” Turok writes, (unwittingly agreeing with Blavatsky). Theorizing that the universe is engaged in an eternal cycle of expansion and contraction: “There have been many Big Bangs, and there will be many more” he believes.

Say Cheese

All life is indeed suffused with so-called ‘god-stuff’ due to the ubiquity of what Blavatsky describes as a supra-physical One Absolute BE-NESS — the First Fundamental Proposition which is “inextricably interwoven and interblended at every point” throughout the universe, and every being in it.

The Theosophical concept of the ‘expanding universe,’ analogous to a image gradually emerging from light through a negative in a photographer’s darkroom, according to Secret Doctrine cosmology (1:63). The s0-called ‘expansion’ was, like the image of that photograph:

“…not an increase in size — for infinite extension admits of no enlargement — it was a change of condition.”

This eternal, implacable, and periodical “Great Breath” of the universe, the great out-breathing and in-breathing, is the core of the occult teaching established as:

“the first fundamental axiom
of the Secret Doctrine.”

“Its one absolute attribute, which is itself, eternal, ceaseless Motion, is called in esoteric parlance the ‘Great Breath,’ — which is the perpetual motion of the universe, in the sense of limitless, ever-present space.”

Mother’s Expansion

There is not only one “big bang,” the ancients taught, but many expansions and contractions of the universe, eternally.

“The expansion ‘from within without’ of the Mother, called elsewhere the ‘Waters of Space,’ ‘Universal Matrix,’ etc.,” Blavatsky insisted (Secret Doctrine 1:63),”does not allude to an expansion from a small centre or focus…

“…but without reference to size or limitation or area, means the development of limitless subjectivity into as limitless objectivity.”

The ‘expansion’ was not “an increase in size,” Blavatsky writes, “for infinite extension admits of no enlargement — it was a change of condition. It ‘expanded like the bud of the Lotus.'”

“Big Bang” is Wrong

“The Lotus plant exists not only as a miniature embryo in its seed (a physical characteristic), but its prototype is present in an ideal form in the Astral Light from ‘Dawn’ to ‘Night.’ — Like everything else, as a matter of fact, in this objective Universe:

“…from man down to mite, from giant trees down to the tiniest blades of grass.”
